Fiona enjoyed nature. At the odd times when she could get out of the city and away from all the sounds of gears clanking and whirring, she loved to sit under trees, or in them if she could manage without falling and just think. Thinking brought about odd things for her every time she did it, but she liked to think nevertheless. Once, she had even had an epiphany of some sort, but it was gone as quickly as it had come.
Today was an off day, and Fiona was wearing her worst black pants and her brightest green shirt, sitting on a branch halfway up a tree. She wasn't as far from the city as she would have liked to have been - she could still hear some of the clocks chiming - but it was enough to let her mind wander.
And wander it did. To her family - to school - to the advanced mechanisms she was learning about - to magick - to the High Arts of Disaster.
She sat up, nearly falling off of the branch she was balancing on, and rubbed her eyes. She wasn't entirely sure what she had been thinking of.
"It's those dreams." She was a little surprised to hear her own voice, but found the sound comforting anyway. "Ah well." Once again, she made herself comfortable and listened to the sounds of nature - the sounds of the clock - and another sound... but of what?

It was just another day for Rusaat. Another day without magick; another day of searching. Running a hand along the scar and looking up, he saw what looked to be a city off in the distance through the trees.
He had no idea what city it was and didn't care at all. Any city on the continent might just be holding on to that one solution he was looking for.
After fixing his dull red trousers and donning his trusty grey cloak, he picked up his walking staff and hobbled on toward this new city.
Shortly later he began to hear the sounds of gears, and possibly a clock? Regardless, this was his next stop, hopefully this would be the place to end his journey. He was so wrapped up in thought that he didn't even notice the girl sitting in the tree above him.

Once again, she made herself comfortable and listened to the sounds of nature - the sounds of the clock - and another sound... but of what?
Fiona sat up as an old man wandered into her line of sight. From her vantage point in the tree, she watched him looking thoughtfully in the direction of the city. She followed his gaze, her thoughts suddenly racing in a manner she had come to associate with the times when she suddenly knew every answer on the test. Something was triggering her thoughts, though she didn't quite know what.
"That's the city of Retyn," she commented, startling herself slightly again. She didn't remember coming to the decision to speak at all. She leaned over slightly, positioning herself so that the man might see her more easily. "Are you heading there?"

Startled, Rusaat whirled around, staff in hand not seeing anything until he realized the sound came from up above him. Looking up, he noticed the small girl in sitting in the tree.
"Retyn, eh?" he repeated, "Yes, I guess I am heading there. So if this is Retyn, then I suppose I've come into the country of Giben?"
Muttering to himself, "... and to think, I've come all the way to Giben already and still no closer to my answer..."
To the young girl "Well then, what brings such a young lady outside of the city all by herself? Not the safest idea if you ask me; what with all of the strangers that come with being so close to a large city."

Fiona took a few moments to regain control of her own voice, head still whirling quicker than it ought to. When she felt she could speak and only say what she wanted to, she did so.
"Yes, sir, you've come to Giben." She heard him mutter to himself, but didn't quite catch what he said. With a small push, she stood up on the branch, looking down at the old man thoughtfully.
Her lips quirked at his later comment, and she had a strange feeling that it looked more deranged than amused. "I'm perfectly safe, sir. Most don't look in the trees and I'm not so far off that I can't scream for help." She took a moment to climb down from the branch, nearly falling in the process. "I come out here to think."
Turning to face him, she tilted her head slowly to one side. "Might I ask - what brings you here, sir?"

"Hmm... Look in the trees, I never thought of that..." Rusaat mumbled. Turning to meet her he said aloud, "I am the great Rusaat!... Or at least I was... but that doesn't matter. I'm here searching for answers. You don't happen to know how to restore lost magick do you?"
Already anticipating her answer he looked away toward the city once more and said "Maybe someone will have the answer in there...", and plopped down against a tree to rest.
"Well, this old man needs to take a breather, you don't mind if I sit here for a few minutes before continuing on do you?", he said making no motion to get up.

The whirring in Fiona's head grew louder, more pronounced, the more the old man spoke. "Rusaat," she repeated, but before she could get out the 'Nice to meet you' he was talking again, something about lost magick, restoring it.
She blocked the sound of her own mind out for a moment, in an attempt to carry on a conversation.
"No, of course I don't mind if you sit here a while." Though she could see he wasn't about to move anytime soon. "I'm Fiona, by the way." She moved to sit on the ground opposite him. "So you're looking to restore lost magick? I wish I could help you."
For some reason these words triggered a thought process that she couldn't quite follow. She let it run its course - eventually, she would know what she was thinking about and why she was thinking about it. It was always better not to worry about it until the revelation came.

"Nice to meet you Fiona. It's nice to see some manners in someone so young."
Then, realizing that he had already told her about his magick problem before he even knew her, he tried a very clumsy recover.
"Yes, one of my colleagues back in Narve suffered an accident and can no longer use his magick. I'm out here looking for a way to fix his problem and possibly help anyone else who would benefit."
Excuse given, Rusaat tried to change the subject before she could dwell on the scar, "Sure is nice weather today isn't it?", he said absently.

Fiona was glad for the subject change herself as it made it easier to block out her mind's functioning. "It's very nice. That's why I came out. It beats being stuck at home, studying for a test or something." She shifted her legs to sit cross-legged, regarding Rusaat.
"Is this your first time to Giben, sir? Have you been to many places? I would love to hear about it if you have." She smiled brightly at him.
All the time, her mind continued working, on what she still couldn't fathom.

Rusaat chuckled, amused by his own change of subject. Then he realized what she had said about not studying for school. "You know Fiona, you should be studying for classes. It's what got me to where I am... rather, where I was just a short time ago."
"As for your questions, yes, this is my first time to Giben. For the last year I have been slowly making my way around the continent looking for the solution to my problem." He said, not realizing his slip-up. "I'm afraid I don't have much to tell you, other than that none of them had any way to fix broken magick. I never stuck around very long in case people wanted to... errr ummm... nevermind..." He said as he remembered one incident back in Fletha.

Fiona watched Rusaat thoughtfully, smiling widely at his comment about studying. "Oh, don't worry, sir. I'm top of my class." She proclaimed this with some small amount of pride - it was a good school she went to, after all.
And then he was talking about the lost magick again, and her mind was working faster than ever. Somewhere inside her, she knew that it was about to come to a conclusion, but what that conclusion was, she had no idea.
She let disappointment spread over her face. "I am very sorry no one has been able to help you sir. And I'm also sorry you have no stories for me! It's somewhat dreary being trapped here day after day, with nothing to break the monoto-" She stopped mid-word, eyes snapping straight ahead to stare into space.
Her mind had just stopped, and it had but one message to get out. The words blurted from her mouth before she even knew she was saying them:
"I know how to return magick!"

Rusaat wasn't really listening to what Fiona was saying. He was still caught up in the horrible memory of Fletha. The questions, the tests, and all of the other things they did to him nearly caused him to shudder. Then he heard the words...
"I know how to return magick!"
Dumbfounded, he looked directly at Fiona. "Now Fiona, it's terribly cruel of you to poke fun of something so serious. Why would you ever say something like that?"
Still, he thought looking skyward and shifting on the ground, what if she's telling the truth? Do I dare get my hopes up?
Continuing his thought process out loud without realizing it he exclaimed, "Yes! Yes I do! Now Fiona, if you do know how to return the lost magick, how would we go about this?"

Immediately after speaking the words, Fiona closed her eyes tightly and buried her face in her hands, fingers rubbing her temples in agitation. "I wouldn't joke about something like that, sir. I do know."
She barely paid attention to the fact that he seemed to be blurting something out at random. She was busy trying to hold on to the piece of information she had just obtained. Eyes still tightly shut, she reached deep into the back of her mind.
And gasped, eyes shooting open. The consciousness she had just found within herself did nothing but disturb her. Still, she had the answer she'd been looking for.
"I do not know all the steps. Only where to find them." She looked at Rusaat, face more serious than before and her eyes filled with a wisdom beyond her years. "The answer lies hidden." She paused, checking her memories once more for confirmation. "In Centis."

"Centis..." Rusaat murmured, "That's quite a distance away, back farther west than I began." He looked at Fiona, but missed the hidden wisdom in her eyes. "You can't possibly leave your schooling for that long a time. You're just beginning your life, don't let this old man put a kink in your plans."
How does she know? The thought raced across Rusaat's mind and was gone, lost in the tirade of emotions he felt at being one step closer to his precious magick. One more thought also entered his mind, and this one did not flit away. Fletha...
"No. No, no, no. I have to head there alone. I will not take you through Fletha..."
To himself he added, "Even if it does mean I don't get my magick back..."

Fiona felt her normal consciousness slipping away slightly, and her mouth was moving more of its own accord, saying things she would never say.
"What do you take me for, old man?" Fiona reeled at the discourtesy coming from her lips, but had no power to stop it. "I've learned all I can from that retched school. And think what more I can gather in Centis, center of all knowledge."
She felt herself standing and moving to stand just in front of Rusaat. "Besides, you'll never find it without me. Don't you want it back." She kneeled down next to him and felt a crooked smile tug at her lips. "Don't you miss it?"
